Director of Child Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service to Pediatrics, & of Eating Disorders Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital
1980 - 2000Dr. Herzog led a team of child psychiatrists at MGH who consulted to pediatricians caring for children and teenagers hospitalized for a broad range of medical problems on the inpatient pediatric units of the hospital. Their role was to elucidate mental health and emotional adjustment issues in those patients and counsel the patients and families on how best to deal with emotional issues associated with their illnesses, injuries or procedures which brought them to the hospital. Dr. Herzog and his team worked with their pediatric colleagues to assure broad support for the patients' full recovery and return to a healthy life in their communities.

1997Dr. David Herzog directed a team of researchers and clinicians focused on understanding eating disorders and advancing associated prevention and treatment approaches. His NIMH-funded longitudinal research study of 246 women with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa investigates the medical and psychological conditions that lead to eating disorders, as well as the effectiveness of current treatment programs. Dr. Herzog and his colleagues mentored students and emerging scientists operating within the field. He organized and participated in symposia to share recent advances in research and to train professionals who work with groups and populations at the highest risks for developing eating disorders. He publishes and lectures widely.

Founder at Harris Center for Education and Advocacy in Eating Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital
1992Dr. Herzog founded the Harris Center for Education and Advocacy in Eating Disorders at MGH, after founding and directing the Harvard Eating Disorders Center at Harvard Medical School. His mission statement was as follows: "Through interdisciplinary research, we seek new knowledge to better understand eating disorders, their detection, treatment and prevention - and we strive to share that knowledge with the community at large. At the heart of the Center is a commitment to promote the healthy development of children, women, and all at risk for eating disorders."
